Low Carb REBOOT

Here I am again. I am going to journal here as it seems to be the only place that I feel free to journal what is going on with me.

I have been on and off low carb since 2007. I went from 432 pounds in 2007 down to 342 pounds in 2008. Then with a sick father and upheaval in my life. I see sawed back in forth.

I got up to 400 pounds in 2011. I was sick. Doctors weren't sure what was wrong. I KNEW that I was not going to get back up to 432 again. So, as doctors did tests. I dieted my way back downward again.

I was diagnosed with Pickwickian's Syndrome. (To me just another medical term saying I was FAT.) I was also found to have sleep Apnea. I was prescribed Lasix at 120mg a day to start. Was dropped down to 80 mg a day later on. Today I am at 40 mg a day. When I take it regularly I do well. But, because of things that have happened recently in my life, more stress and I skip taking it if I am going to be away from the house.

Well, I am starting low carb again today. I am at 386 which is not bad. I have been off the Lasix for about 3 days and I am sure that is why the weight is up. But, today I have been faithful to EVERYTHING. I have taken my Lasix and I have been low carb all day. I made a huge pot of chicken soup with a bunch of veggies. That is what Ihave eaten today.

Going to store tomorrow and get a few more things that I will need. Turkey bacon, extra virgin coconut oil, etc. I am determined to do this thing.

And I am determined to share the good, the bad and the ugly on here. No matter what. I have had a long look at myself in the mirror. I do not like what I see. This has to change and it can only start with the person in the mirror. No one else.

So today, I am under 20 carbs. I have not measured accurately because I know all the veggies in the soup. And they are all low carb. I have had a bowl of soup today. If I am hungry in a couple of hours I will have a beef stick and a piece of string cheese. later, a couple hours before bed I am going to have some blueberry tea with a tablespoon of coconut oil in it.

I will weigh myself every Monday and I hope for the best.

I HAVE TO DO THIS!

Thanks, Wen! Yep, those looks are hard indeed. But, I am glad I finally did it.

I followed things well yesterday even though it was hard. I had been commiting carbicide so much it wasn't funny. Too drastically cut myself down to less than 20 carbs through my system into a tailspin I think! LOL Anyway, I do not think my body knew what hit it it! I noticed that I did not make as many trips back and forth to the bathroom all night. I only got up once! I noticed this morning that I was not groggy when the alarm went off. I got right up and was ready to go. So far so good.

I wasn't going to do it, but, I did get on the scale. I was down 4 pounds!

My plan is in place and I am ready for day 2!

Welcome home, Sue! Missed ya! I'm glad you're recommitting to low-carb and it sounds like you've got a plan and are getting everything "lined up" for success! I've been transitioning to Paleo/Primal since August 16th and haven't stopped in so often, but will get better now that I'm on Day 23 of my Whole30 Challenge. I haven't missed the grain/flour, legumes or dairy too much, but the artificial sweetener is still calling me bigtime when I have coffee in the mornings. But I AM going to get that monkey off my back!! I know I'm addicted to sweeteners as it takes more and more to make things sweet to me. But I have not given in when I have my coffee with coconut cream, not for 23 days. And no Diet Coke with Splenda in 23 days either!!

WE CAN DO THIS, SUE!

Good luck Sue. If you can keep it under 20 carbs per day, many of those health problems will get better. I know it is easy to say, but hard in the execution. We're rooting for you,l and I look forward to hearing more about your ketogenic days.

Had a little stumble this week, but, it was minor and I got right back up again. TOM appeared out of the blue after not being around for 3 months. Just gotta love the menopause thing, huh? Anywhoooo... I guess I understand now why last week I was fiending for sweet and salty things...

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. I am falling into place and doing pretty good.

It is a struggle every single day here. As I am sure it is for everyone needing to lose weight and get control of their life. As everyone else, I am having good days and bad days. I honestly have been investigating weight loss surgery. I guess, I have given up on that route right now. I have no way to pay for it. I cannot do it with a spend down on my medical card. I have to be realistic. It is not going to be an option for me at this particular time.

It does continue to be hard following low carb here. Honestly, it is a matter of money. I am a meat eater. I would rather have meat more than anything, however, it is expensive. I have a hard time sticking to eggs and tuna fish all the time. I know it is doable, but, it is also boring. I am maintaining.

I check my weight often to make sure that I do not go back to the 400 pound range. So far that is the one thing I have achieved. I checked my weight 2 days ago and I was 388. I need to get that back down by next week.

I do think that my stress levels have come down considerably. At least I am not in a state of constant panic as I was before. For all who have asked, my mom is back home now. She still has the lock brace on her leg. She is going to physical therapy at thehospital 3 days a week. (and with the exception of a fall this past weekend) she is doing well being back in her apartment. Of course, my husband stops by there every morning at 7 when he gets off work to put her leg brace on her. He is also there for her therapy 3 times a week. She goes back to the ortho doctors at the end of November. Hoping good news by then.

Hubby and I will be married 23 years this October 28th. Doesn't seem possible. I wish I was down to the weight I was when we married. I am 33 pounds heavier now than I was back then. (Sadly I was below that back a couple of years ago when my dad started getting sick....I cannot believe I was 342 back then...*sigh*) I would like to lose 100 pounds by this time next year. But, will b e happy to lose 10 pounds in the next month.

Well, that is my update. Hope you all are doing well.

Sue - so glad you're back - one meal, one day at a time. I strongly encourage you to get into ketosis and stay there - I've been in ketosis for about 60 days and I have so little hunger (the blood suger highs and lows type of hunger) - it's more like an empty- stomach signal that it's time to eat and I do, but it's controllable and pleasant. My husband is unemployed ubfortunately so to cut costs - I like grass-fed beef which is costly, so I mainly buy ground beef which I turn into marvelous stir-fries with kale and other veggies. I also eat a fair amount of ground chicken, chicken thigh meat, pot roasts, and other lower cost meats. I like (love) steak too - can't do grass-fed which is too costly - but I can afford better cuts of steak by eating smaller portions - keeping my protien capped at about 25 grams per meal (totally possible while in ketosis) - I divide good steaks like filet or ribeyes into 4-5 oz portions and freezing them. I also have a favorite lunch for work - easy and so filling and good - 1 bag of shirataki noodles (with tofu, not the Miracle Noodles which are yucky) Drained, rinsed and dry fried in a skillet with a little chicken base added for flavor until fairly dried - then add 3 oz of any leftover meat or tuna, two wedges of Laughing Cow light cheese wedges, some veggies ( like kale, mushrooms canned or fresh, artichoke hearts, spinach, etc) and a tablespoon of cream or half and half - cook until cheese is melted and scoop into a container to be reheated at work. Sometimes I'll vary it with low-carb spaghetti sauce, or leftover sauce - whatever I have - it's always good and this is my lunch most days. To keep my fat high I supplement with mct or coconut oil throughout the day. I do best if I eat mostly the same things every day, but I vary it enough to not be at all bored. Snacks are cottage cheese, Nick's Sticks, homemade jerky, veggies (even carrots don't affect my ketosis), half a Quest Bar, etc. it works because I'm down 25 lbs(of the 50 lbs I want to lose) since 8/03. I'm a very weightloss resistant 58 year old menopausal woman so I'm very pleased, feel great and don't feel the need to "cheat". I don't know if this can help you or not, but maybe it will. I also exercise about 3x weekly. Regards - look forward to seeing your progress - i wondered where you went to journal - I guess another forum, but glad you're back! Marie

Good for you for not giving up. We're on a pretty tight budget here too, I'm currently an unemployed, middle-aged college student.
I have never been good at meal planning, but I think I'm going to try it. I get in to trouble when I don't have a plan and end up
succumbing to the lure of my dh's carby foods.

In case I don't get back, Happy Anniversary.

Thanks for anniversary wishes. Let's see......we went grocery shopping and rented a couple of movies to watch. We wanted to go out to dinner at this one restaurant, but, we couldn't afford to do that. I told him we would go there when I get down to 300. Hmmm...only 88 to go

Trying to get a grip on everything here. Made some real good soup today. (I posted the recipe on the recipe board). I am sticking to just meat this week. Getting myself back into ketosis. My carbs are below 10. I need to get back into the swing of things.

On a side note. My niece (bless her heart). She came home from Peoria the other day with a caramel apple pie from one of our favorite orchards. I teasingly looked at her and said, "I hate you right now.." She gave me the pie and said happy anniversary. I had a piece of it last night. I told my husband he could have the rest. I didn't even finish the piece I had. I told him that it didn't taste good to me. (Honestly, I could eat a whole pie from this place. That is how good they are.) He said it tasted as good as it always does to him. I said, "oh well, I guess it is a good thing for me." Once I taste something that I don't care for I never touch again.

Well, off to wreak havoc in the living room.

I have been sitting here depressed since the weekend. PArtly it has to do with my period I am sure. But, we are flat broke this week. We have no money for groceries. That is depressing because we still have plenty of food, however, it is all bad food. Ramen noodles, cans of soup, spaghetti, etc. We won't go hungry, but, I know I won't be eating a lot. I guess I can calorie count until I can get more groceries. I really am getting tired of all the b.s. life has been throwing at me. I just want to be able to have just one month where life is good. Yes, I am bellyaching. I am just so darn tired of all the crap that seems to go on in my life. My mom. Andy. My health. I am just getting so tired. I want to be able to have a normal life for just a month! Is that too much to ask? I hate this. I have hated this ever since 2008 when my dad got sick. Saturday he will have been gone 3 years now. I need him so bad right now. I just miss him so much. I miss the way he could get me to laugh when no one else could. I miss his voice. He may have lived up north here, but, he still had that good ol' southern twang in his voice. I love you, dad. I can still her him say, "I love you too baby."

Hi Sue, Good news on your weight loss and congrats on saying "no more" to the pie. That is hard thing to do.

I feel for you with your grief for your dad. My parents are both gone and they were my best friends and my greatest fans, too. I could always count on them and their love was absolute and unconditional. Fortunately, I have a marvelous husband who has really picked me up through the hard times. I have a terrific family - 2 sons and my dh. Very grateful for them and my friends. Praying for you.

Weight popped back up. I have doubled my dose of lasix. I can tell from my legs and ankles that it is water retention. I was afraid this was going to happen. I hate taking double doses of this stuff. But, I hate the scale creeping back up when I know I am not eating that much. This whole process is frustrating. I am on the verge of starving myself like I did some years ago. I just seem to get myself in this rut and I go to the extreme. I know I should not do it. I am just so tired of all this crap. I am so tempted to go back on the KK train again. At least I was losing. But, at what cost to my health? I guess I think that I am fat enough that it won't affect my health for a while. I figure the weight off is more healthy than how I am doing it. I don't know. It is a never ending battle.

Still stuck in the same place. Different days and different challenges. Stress levels are really high again. Just get settled down and it seems we get hit hard again. I am really a calorie counter now. I haven't gained. I am just so screwed up as far as a schedule that I do the calorie counting again. On days I am up with my lasix I do real well with my numbers (scale) but I didn't take it for a few days and it popped back up. All I can do is the best I can with what is thrown at me. I guess I have finally learned my lesson.

I was reading a book about healing your metabolism and getting blood sugars regulated and it said that it's important to eat the 3 meals a day until you have it under control. I've been trying to do that better as my habit was to put off or skip breakfast. We'll see if it helps my energy etc.... something to think about.

Praying for you! <3
