Coconut Oil vs. MCT oil

I can only speak for myself but weighing once a month is anti-productive. I weigh daily. I want to know what my body is doing. My weight fluctuates a lot and I need to keep on top of it. If my weight is up for several days, I look at what I am doing that might be causing the increase. No one had to tell me that my period caused an increase in weight because over time, I was able to decipher that for myself. On IF, if I weighed once a month I would have no idea that IF was helping me to lose weight again. One thing that I noticed is that my weight had started stalling after my weight increase during menstruation. My period would end but my weight would take close to 2 weeks before it would go down again. And by the time it would begin to drop, my period would start again so my weight would go back up before going down to my pre-period weight. I have even come to credit my period for gaining weight. Why, because eventually, I even noticed that my body seemingly would gain for the shear purpose of starting my period. For a while, my period would not start until my weight = 150 lbs.As long as I didn't get to weigh 150 lbs my period would not start. When my period started 2 days ago, I weighed only 146. Therefore it is taking less weight to start my period. When I weighed today, I weighed 142 lbs. Never had I had such a satisfying drop in weight. I am still on my period yet I had a menstrual woosh. I believe that if we took a good solid look at our periods, ladies, we would discover some deep secrets that our bodies have been trying to hide from us. I now believe that ketosis becomes sluggish during menstruation, add some CO or MCT and continue IF which will make ketosis more productive at that time. I don't know this has only been a speculation for the past month. But it is important to not let the scale become upsetting by accepting the fact that weight will fluctuate. Then allow those fluctuations to communicate with you. The uterus is a seeking device.

Is there a beneficial difference between refined CO and EVCO? I bought a container of Nutiva's EVCO and then bought Spectrum's refined CO(still waiting on it to arrive, should be here Tues). I plan on using the refined for cooking, because my husband doesn't like the coconut taste. I take a teaspoon of EVCO with each meal(working up to a tablespoon). I've been using the EVCO as a moisturizer for my hands, heels and face, but hear it's not good to use refined CO on your face as it can clog your pores. But do you get the same health benefits from refined as you do with the extra virgin CO?

Black57: Have you tried using those test strips to measure ketosis during your TOM? I know they're not always accurate, but they could help. I don't get TOM because I am on the Depo-Provera injections, so I wouldn't know, but your theory is a good one.

I use the refined on my skin. BUT, I when I initiated the use of CO, I did not use it cosmetically. I wanted to see what exclusively injesting it would do to my "outsides" and I noticed a considerable difference in the condition of my skin without even using it as a moisturizer. I use the virgin oil for cooking I put that in my coffee. I like the coconutty taste but I don't like smelling it on my skin. I get zits no matter what oil lands on my face. MCT oil is especially nasty on my face when it comes to zits.

You know, I have never used the keto-stix. But, that may change under the circumstances...that is, if I have another period. At my age, I never know which period will be my last.

Oh I love the coconut smell, just not the taste. I was thinking of using the refined for cooking and ingesting and the virgin for my hair and skin. I've been hoping that the CO will help with my acne, as I keep getting zits no matter what I do!

I've been a fan of coconut oil since shortly after starting LC, but have recently become interested in MCT oil. Anyone ever use the NOW Foods MCT Oil that can give me some feedback on it?

That's the brand I use. I think that it is great. I could use it in my lawn mower...if I owned one...and it would run better than it does on gasoline or the petrol they use in the UK. I use the MCT sport. MCT oil gives me real get-up-and-go.

I've used the NOW MCT. I don't have any comparison as I have not used another brand.

I would wager that all MCY oil is the same. I have just grown accustomed to NOW and that is what I usually look for. BUT, my first encounter with MCT oil came in an emulsion that compares to pepto bismol. So make sure that whatever you get it is a crystal clear oil and not a bottle of Jergens.

I had a nasty cold this weekend and it improved greatly when I had my coffee with coconut oil. I am still a little conjested but coughing and sneezing diminished greatly. Reason to make sure that I don't become lax of consuming my MCT or CO.

I just ordered a bottle of the NOW MCT Oil from Amazon to use along with the Coconut Oil that I've been using for the last two years. The MCT Oil was just under $20 and I have a Prime membership with Amazon, so no additional shipping cost and it will be here in two days.

I'm anxious to add this slowly but surely to my daily intake!

Can't wait to read what you find. I'm on the fence because I already eat and cook with coconut oil and take fish oil, so adding a third oil just seems a little too much.

I just bought a bottle of Now MCT oil at my local supplement store.

I put a teaspoon on my salad along with my olive oil dressing. I felt just a tad nauseous after eating the salad...the MCT oil reminded me of mineral oil or something....

Went to bed 2 hrs later and had a hard time falling asleep; I kept getting anxiety rushes in my head (not a normal thing for me). I had to talk myself down from a full blown anxiety attack.

Not an entirely pleasant experience overall. Now, why are people using this oil? Is it causing accelerated weight loss compared to regular low carb diet? *scratches head*

FWIW, I am used to eating virgin coconut oil and canned coconut milk and I've never had an anxiety-type reaction with those.

MCT oil has a higher concentration of C8 and, I think C10 acids which are more quickly converted to ketones than other fats. The large number of ketones they make tend to affect the brain (it's a supplement recommended for treating epileptic children), so that could explain the anxiety attacks.

Medium-chain triglycerides are advantageous in promoting weight loss although not beneficial to exercise performance. MCT increase fat oxidation and energy expenditure as well as reduce food intake and beneficially alter body composition

Medium chain triglyceride oil consumption as part of a weight loss diet does not lead to an adverse metabolic profile when compared to olive oil.

The first person I heard talking about MCT was Dr McCleary Mother Nature's Brain Fuel as human breast milk is a very good source of MCT (for babies anyway) it must be good for growing brains.
If you search his site (The Brain Trust Program) you'll find he also suggests they may provide help to those with Alzheimer's.
I also use them in salad dressing (probably a tablespoon. Sometimes also in my coffee. I use coconut oil as well. As they tend to rev up your metabolism (make your body run at a higher temperature) it may not be sensible to use them before bedtime.
MCT is easily converted to ketones so it helps those who want to say in ketosis.

Hmmm...I have enough trouble with anxiety as it is! I hope that I don't have a bad reaction to the MCT oil!

Thanks for the links, Ted.

Jase,

Just take the stuff in the morning and don't exceed a tablespoon at first and that should give you a heads-up as to whether it'll give you anxiety, energy, nausea, or any other bad or good immediate symptom.

Okay...note to self: do not eat MCT oil in the evening
