OK, I'm sure lots of us had never heard of Atkins 'Fat-Fast', even though it's right in the text of DANDR [pages 272-274 in my paperback copy]. Atkins mainly used it as a tool to get folks into ketosis who were having a very difficult time getting started with weight loss or hopelessly stalled. First off, it's not for everyone and it's not the answer to everything! It is a tool and it is meant for the short term, not the long term.

What exactly is the 'Atkins Fat-Fast'? I'm glad you asked! It is basically five 'feedings' daily of 200 calories each at 90% fat. Obviously the food choices are limited to foods with high fat content. Dr. Atkins original 'Fat-Fast' in DANDR consisted of a list of eight foods! Wow, you say! That list has been tweaked, expanded, toyed with and added to by individuals over the years. So I'm going to give you a few links to read some more about this plan. There are tons more links on the intarweb if you choose to do additional research, which I highly recommend.

Here's a very thorough article by Di Bauer of CarbSmart that goes quite in depth about the FF and gives lots of variations on the foods that have worked for others.

Here's a blog entry by Jimmy Moore about his take on Dr. Salerno's 'Fat-Fast'. Everyone should read this as Jimmy has a great perspective on the FF. Here's a second blog entry by Jimmy that gives more FF info.

OK, that's enough reading to get everyone started if you're at all interested in knowing what the 'Fat-Fast' (FF) is all about.

I made plans last year to start the FF the first of January this year. I started yesterday, Sunday, January 4, 2008. I'm undecided at this point how long I will stay on it, but I plan to update my FF Chronicles in this thread. So, please join in the discussion, ask questions and make comments. Let's all learn together!

200 calories of fat? Isn't that less than a tablespoon of peanut butter? So five spoonsful of peanut butter a day and nothing else? I'd worry about 'cracking' on the second day and gorging on anything I could get in my mouth.

Hey Ron! You may remember I did the fat fast back at the end of the summer when I felt like the scale wasn't moving. It was successful for me as I lost 7 pounds in 7 days. I didn't think it was hard to follow. Mostly I ate things like:

Deviled eggs w/mayo
tuna w/mayo
cream cheese w/peanut butter (very good)
chicken salad w/mayo
macadamia nuts

There are other suggestions at this site

Day 1 ~~ Weigh-In=228.4 ~~ Daily Loss=0 ~~ Loss to Date=0

Feedings
1. Coffee with 1 T CO (Coconut Oil) & 2 T HWC (Heavy Whipping Cream)
2. 4 pcs bacon
3. 2 oz CC (Cream Cheese) on celery
4. 1 oz Macs (Macadamia Nuts)
5. 1/4 c HWC

Notes
A very mild low-grade nausea all day. Nothing that was intolerable, just enough to know it was there. No excessive hunger. The foods seem filling enough that this is doable. Drank either water, coffee or herbal tea.

Hey FDJ, just curious: Do you think the nausea is from too much fat or from reactive hypoglycemia?

That mild nausea is most likely the limits of what your system can take in the amount of fat - I always find it amazing at how our bodies "tell 'us..

One minute, one hour, one day, 1 pound at a time ...

Day 2 ~~ Weigh-In=226.4 ~~ Daily Loss=2.0 ~~ Loss to Date=2.0

Feedings
1. 4 pcs bacon
2. 2 oz CC w/HWC
3. 2 oz CC w/Celery
4. 2 oz CC w/HWC
5. 1 oz Macs

Notes
Nausea is pretty much gone this morning! Hungry when I got up but not 'starving'. I really like starting with the bacon, as it gives me kind of a traditional breakfast food. I'm not forcing myself to drink water but I do find myself sipping on it often, which I believe is a must for the FF.

I think the nausea is from more 'straight' fat than my body is used to. The nausea is gone today, so I think one's body will adjust.

I never tried the fat fast when I lost all my weight with Atkins and I had a heck of a time getting into ketosis.Never got a purple reading on stick and always felt lethargic except for certain days where I would feel euphoric.Funny thing is I am now eating 80 percent fat and thats close to a fat fast.

My body seems to make more carbs from protein than usual.I have used a product called Vanadyl Sulfate that lowers blood sugar without raising insulin and this helps alot.

Then theres my ex GF who amazinly was eating 3 pieces of bread, veggies onions and a piece of fruit EVERY day and her stick was deep purple. Her friends started hating on her as the weight just melted off her body and one day she told me she was thru with low carb and went back to burritos, enchiladas and the belly that accompanies them. And Here I was suffering on meat and eggs and no color change with stick.

EDIT....I shouldnt say suffering since I never have become sick of carnitas and chicken, sauteed veggies ribs etc...

1. 4 pcs bacon

3. 2 oz CC w/Celery
4. 2 oz CC w/HWC
5.
Are you just drinking the HWC??
No, the CC w/HWC I mention is a blend of the two. I took two 8 oz packages of CC and 8oz of HWC, put them in my big mixer and whipped it up nice and fluffy. Put it in the fridge to cool and get stiff. Get out two ounces of it. I also added a little DaVinci's Vanilla Syrup to it.

I actually weight this stuff out, and believe me two ounces ain't a whole lot! But being so fat/calorie rich it does a good job of staving off hunger.

Now, when I eat CC with celery, I just slice off 2 oz from the block, put it on a paper plate and spread it onto my celery stalk with a knife. Sometimes I sprinkle just a fuzz of Cavender's Greek Seasoning on it, and sometimes I just eat it plain. I can actually just slice the CC off and eat it 'as-is'.

Interesting. Is it good?

Well, I assume you're talking about the CC/HWC mixture. It's good to the point of making the CC more palatable, but it's not something I'd classify as great.

One note for those who might be curious about the use of AS. I'm not trying to go AS free here, I'm just trying to make the best out of the so called foods on this FF. And I don't add enough to make the CC/HWC really sweet, just enough to keep it from having what I call a 'flat' taste. At 1000 calories a day, a little AS shouldn't be a big problem.

Day 3 ~~ Weigh-In=224.6 ~~ Daily Loss=1.8 ~~ Loss to Date=3.8

Feedings
1. 4 pcs bacon
2. 2 oz CC w/HWC
3. 1 oz Macs
4. 2 oz tuna with 1 T mayonnaise
5. 2 oz CC w/HWC

Notes
Nausea still seems to be pretty much gone on this third morning! Still hungry when I got up but not 'ravenously starving'. When I've done total food fasts before it always seemed like things got somewhat easier after the third day.

When I eat my 'feedings' I obviously don't feel as full as when I do normal LC but it's not that empty feeling like I got when I did low-fat either. I think this just might help my body adjust to less food during normal times, so we'll see.

I am weighing everyday, which is something I've never done in my 18 months of LC, usually weekly on Sunday morning. However, I wanted a daily record during the FF.

It looks like you're averaging about a pound a day. That's not bad, Ron. What is it with men that they can lose at least something every day and we women have to struggle for every ounce?
