Have you ever thought about subsisting on eggs, butter, and cheese only?

In response to weight gain that has happened over the past 2+ years, one strategy my friend Jackie Eberstein (who worked as a registered nurse with patients of the late great Dr. Robert C. Atkins for three decades) suggested to me on the recent low-carb cruise was for me to start consuming lots of small meals every few hours and make sure they are very high-fat, adequate in protein, and very low in carbohydrates.

So that got me to thinking about how to implement something like this that I could do, be consistent with, and enjoy (which is a major element of being successful on a plan as I discovered for myself in 2004). After contemplating how to do this in a way that would work for me (a philosophy I have shared over and over again), I remembered an interview I did with Drs. Mike & Mary Dan Eades in April 2008 where I talked about going on an all-egg diet for a period of time. Ever since I did this interview with the Eades, I have been meaning to start my own "eggfest" -- and now I'm doing it!

Click here to learn more about my "eggfest" and all the guidelines I am following in an effort to shed the pounds and improve my key health markers like HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL particle size.

I would love to do this, but I am not that crazy about eggs by themselves. Is there a way to do this and add some ground beef? Would one get the same results?

If you are saying we are more likely to "catch your drift" if we are downwind? Big Grin (Then yes, I get it.)

Very interesting, Jimmy. May your success be swift yet sure.

Are you eating in small, frequent meals to blunt the insulin response to the albumin? Is there some other factor at stake?

Suzan,

You might need a multivitamin/multimineral supplement (what is it with these low-potassium steer these days?!) or include organ meats and some source of gamma-linolenic? (whatever's in EPO and borage oil), but it is practiceable.

Right onTongue All those sulphur bearing amino acids in eggs pack a punch! I train bodybuilders who eat copious amounts of eggs and the gym has a perpetual stench of decomposing eggs.

I couldn't do it because I'm not a big fan of eggs. I can only tolerate eating them a couple times a month. I think I could do an all burger diet though. I've been eating burgers every day for breakfast for probably at least a year now and I never get tired of them.

I'm trying the eggfest to see if it makes any difference in my progress. I'm like Jimmy and I never get tired of eggs and don't have any of the aforementioned adverse effects.

Grace and peace,

Certainly grass-fed beef could be done in place of eggs as long as you kept it isocaloric to the eggfest. ENJOY! Thom, the frequent meals is what both Dr. Vernon and Jackie Eberstein said would best handle my hyperinsulinemia.

Thanks, Jimmy! Was just wondering what it was about the small, frequent meals that made it better for your hyperinsulinemia over something like IF.

Maybe that's what my problem is!

I only eat two meals a day, and my first one is usually around noon.

I guess I might try a customized "suzan" version of this by adding in some grassfed beef and taking one egg away at each meal.

Thanks for the info, Jimmy, et al.

Hi Jimmy: best wishes to you!

One tweak I'd like to suggest if you are consuming more than 7 eggs plus 7 oz cheese per day---start ditching the egg whites (where most of the proteins reside). I base this on Dr. Kwasniewski's optimal protein intake of 1g protein per kg body weight desired.
Assuming you want to get back to 100 kg (220 lbs), thus 100 g of protein is plenty: 7 whole extra large eggs provides 49 g, 7 oz of shredded mozza-cheddar provides another 49 g.

Should you need some further pro- sat fat, pro-egg yolks encouragement: here's an example from a 65 kg British male

Thom, I can tell you that NONE of the low-carb experts who joined us on the low-carb cruise were fans of IF. NOT A SINGLE ONE! Especially for people like me with hyperinsulinemia, IF is counterproductive to dealing with this issue. Perhaps I should bring Jackie Eberstein on my podcast to explain it better. Big Grin

Hey wannabelowcarb! I'm not consuming that much cheese in a day...but I'm reserving the right to have UP TO ONE OUNCE per egg. I'm getting about 4 ounces of cheese and 8 eggs on average right now. I appreciate the info! Wink

Jimmy, can you please do a show about losing weight, hyperinsulinemia and IF now? Big Grin

I think that you might have the answer as to why I am not losing much weight!

I am doing constant IF by not eating until noon, and then again at 7pm every day. Starting tomorrow, since I'm not fond of eggs, I am going to try a modified version of your egg diet using pastured eggs (mostly eating yolks as I hate whites) + a small grassfed patty + a little cheese and the required fat for each meal, several times a day.

Jimmy -- I wish you the best. But I have to say, this diet soda thing drives me crazy. I hope you'll make eliminating it a priority.

Here's some food for thought, even though the direction of the cause->effect arrow isn't clear: http://www.webmd.com/diet/news/20050613/...ore-weight

Suzan, I would think doing this with meat would work just as well. Eggs work for me. Smile Lemme know how you do.

Kilton, read my menus blog today...giving it another go to ditch the diet sodas altogether. Wish me well!

I'm going to give it a go starting tomorrow with a little meat and a little eggs at each meal. I'm picking up 4 dozen eggs from the farm tomorrow, and I already have a freezerfull of grassfed beef and butter. (Some people collect stamps, I collect meat and butter...) Smile

I'll let you know!

Jimmyness,

You are blazing a new trail, young Jedi! lol

I wish you MUCH encouragment. I never fully realized the VALUE of eating several small meals until I was watching the Biggest Loser one night and Jillian really stressed to one of the women to NOT skip the meals. The person was trying to work out longer by skipping the snacks at their break which left them struggling with their losses. Looking back on my history I kept trying to eat less and less thinking it would help. I tried to put off eating until I was very hungry thinking I was somehow limiting my over all caloric intake.

ughugugughhh.... what an idiot I was.

I think that Jackie's advice is SPOT on. At one depressed point, I called and and she told me to ditch the dairy and the nuts. OH NO!!! NOT THE DAIRY!!! I really struggled with that and justified why a woman my age NEEDED dairy. Well, after a LONG rebellious bout with Fage yogurt (Yummmm). I have laid all of that down and sticking to what she said.... the basics / frequent small meals / and got my thyroid checked. The first week of completely following her advice, I dropped 7 pounds. I am anxious to see what I will do this week.

You have a LOT of good friends in the medical community who really care about you and I know (as do you!) that we can trust their advice. They live it every day!

Be encouraged Jimmy -- every egg is a little closer to that next cruise photo! Wink
