Billy Mclaughlin is a guitarist who ha had to make some adaptations due to focal dystonia, a condition comparable to Parkinsons disease. He became a left handed guitarist so that he could hang on to his art. Well, now I will get to the point. Billy's music is featured on the Purina One commercials ( Cat and Dog ). The music playing in the background is Billy's "Fingerdance". I want to share that with you here:

Just so you all know, I am Billy's Biggest Fan!!!

I just learned that his documentary on his journey through music after contracting focal dystonia will be featured in Los Angeles county. We live about 1 1/2 hours away from the facility. I didn't think that my husband would be interested, afterall, I am the musician and sometimes things that I want to do requires a lot of effort. For example, I played in a nice little jazz band at a nice little coffee shop. The only problem was that it took so long to reach the place. Not that I couldn't drive on my own, but I don't want to drive home at 10:00 at night or even later.

Well, in the attempt to shorten this story, my husband looked up the directions and decided that we will be seeing Billy next week. I am trying my best to calm myself down now. You see, Matt ( my husband ) and I know Billy. I had several opportunities to jam with him when he performed in Ohio several years ago-before he contracted FD. I am in the process of completing an arrangment for flute choir, of his composition titled "Coffee Break". I discussed this briefly with him via email so that he was in agreement with it. This arrangement will, almost definitely, be premiered at the community college concert where I was a composition major. There will be an alumnus concert in September and the faculty is choosing who gets to perform at this concert. My former composition professor heard my arrangement of Coffee Break and is really pushing for its performance. I did this arrangement to pay homage to my "guitar hero".

Well, it now looks like I will be able to see Billy and discuss the music with him before it gets performed.

Oh, in addition to my previous post...I have a deep down belief that a VLC/ketogenic diet which has helped various movement disorders such as epilepsy and parkinsons, can have positive effects on some forms of dystonia. Parkinsons in particular since it is so similar to focal dystonia.Actually, I had contacted the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation and asked if any work had been done with the ketogenic diet. Then I contacted the Metabolic Society to send info regarding research with parkinsons a few months back. I had not heard anything. I guess I should check on that.

I don't get to watch tv much so don't think I have seen the purnina one commercial. But did enjoy listening to Billy's Fingerdance. I really hope that you get to play your arrangement of Coffee Break at the alumus concert in September and also will share it with us here!

My mother has parkinsons but I can't get her away from the sweets. At almost 89 she just doesn't want to have make any changes in her diet.

The only time I see the commercials are in the morning during the Early Show with Harry Smith.
I am usually sitting here at the computer. When the commercial comes on I have to crank the TV up because the lady who is speaking is talking too loud!!! Can't hear Billy's guitar!

Yeah, when we reach a certain age, we feel justified in eating exactly what it is that is causing the most harm. I wonder if I will be like that at 89.

Do you know if he's ever considered learning to play a Chapman Stick? It seems like it would perfectly fit his style of tapping.

Well, here is my new avatar of me playing with Billy McLaughlin. As a matter of fact, we are playing Fingerdance from the Purina One commercial. He actually forgot to call me up on stage and I ran up to tell him that he forgot about me. He then said okay let's play Fingerdance...I don't know Fingerdance...Yes you do its in D and we just played Fingerdance. I believe that a ketogenic or VLC diet would help with his dystonia. I guess I am going to hafta start nagging him again.

What was cool is that the staff at thie facility including the Reverend enjoyed our impromptu prompting.

HUGS,

LINDA
Thanks LALINDA, I feel like I am the most fortunate person on this planet. Believe me when I say that your life is not complete until you have been to one of Billy Mac's concerts. If you ever do have the opportunity to attend one of his concerts. make sure that you talk to him. The concert is not over, if you had not had the chance to converse with him. He always makes little comments that are so profound. That night he just commented on how he believes that beauty is underrated. And just thinking about that and his situation choked me up. Remember he has a movement disorder that was onset, so he know the beauty of movement. This is something we take for granted. It probably becomes even more beautiful once it is gone. What about us, we are fighting a disease called obesity but obesity does not make us ugly. We're still beautiful. I am wearing braces now but I must remember that my teeth were beautiful before the braces...they were never ugly. Beauty is underrated, just those three words takes me deep into thought.
Billy truly loves people and he he is sharing himself with the audience. His concerts are more like a dinner party that he is hosting and the food of choice is his music. Best low carb meal on the planet.

Billy gave me several hugs...I told my daughter, if he kept hugging me, I would suddenly become homeless because my husband will have to kick me out of the house. I am just glad that I didn't become the geek that I am. I stayed calm and as quiet as I could stand. This time two weeks ago, I had no thoughts or plans on seeing him.Now I have the memory of the day that I thought would never come.
