Is Anyone Doing TNT?

Junior Low-Carber

Is anyone following the plan from the book TNT (Targeted Nutrition Tactics). I think Jimmy has interviewed the authors a few times. The book is geared toward men but it says it works for women as well.

There are a few plans in the book - I will be following Plan A which is the lowest carb plan, and I probably won't change plans because of blood sugar issues.

Basically, you eat low carb foods from their list of specified foods (kind of like South Beach style) - only fats are not limited. This will work for me because I don't have to weigh, measure or count carbs all day long. To make this liveable for life I have added a few other low carb favorites of mine that is not on their food list like soy, shiratake, limited amount of berries for fruit (they don't allow fruit).

I am hoping this will work for me. I am obese and need to lose 63 pounds.

Oh, the book stresses their exercise plan as well - but I'm not ready for that yet. I'm just starting with the diet.

Well, glad to be here. Jimmy's got a great website.

Hey there cutthecarbs2008! It's great to see you and I'm glad you found your way here and posting. The TNT Diet was written by Dr. Jeff Volek from UConn and Adam Campbell from Men's Health magazine. It's an outstanding program for people wanting to not just improve their diet, but their fitness as well. Several people have told me they LOVE the program and I did have a chance to interview Adam about it when it first came out last year:

I'm currently working on getting a podcast interview with Dr. Volek because he is a wealth of knowledge on the subject of livin' la vida low-carb, too. Here's an interview I did with him a couple of years ago:

THANKS again for joining us here at the "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Discussion" forum!

Wow, Jimmy, thank you so much for the response and links!

I really look forward to your interview with Dr. Volek. Please tell him I love the book and hope he writes another version, this time geared toward us ladies! Also, in my humble opinion, to make this plan liveable (for those of us not graduating to his other plans for health reasons), I feel his food recommendations can be expanded to include Shiratake, a limited amount of low carb berries, low carb yogurt, low carb soy products (like unsweetened soy milk which I love in tea), etc. I feel for any plan to be truly liveable we need to make it "ours" without wandering too far from basic principles.

Anyway, thank you again for replying and I look forward to your interview with Dr. Volek! You rock Jimmy!

Also, I forgot to mention that the low carb recipes in the book are awesome. The book also recommends Nexgen muffins. I tried to order them through your link several days ago, but the website said they're not selling them during the hot months of summer due to new repackaging.

Yes, the NexGen muffins have to be kept frozen when shipping and that's next to impossible in the summer heat even with ice packs. They'll be back soon.

As for shirataki and a book for women like the TNT Diet, you might want to check out Cassandra Forsythe's The Perfect Body Diet. She works with Dr. Volek at the University of Connecticut in pursuit of her doctorate degree. And she's a BIG FAN of glucomannon, the basic ingredient in shirataki.

I've written extensively about shirataki noodles, including LOTS of recipes:

Thanks Jimmy, but I read an excerpt from her book and I'm not impressed. Even with her low carb recommendations, she still recommends only low fat products. Been there, done that, and I'm not doing it again. I do not believe in the low fat mantra. Especially if you keep your carbs very low like you do on TNT. Plus her diet is faddy, you have to take glucomman fiber powder with every meal - no thanks I'll stick to my shirataki noodles, thank you.

She should have done us all a favor and just co-wrote a ladies version of TNT with Dr. Volek! I guarantee you, it would sell.

So I'll be sticking with TNT and see where it takes me. And I'll be waiting for those muffins to reappear!

Hmm. She is also a co-author of this book: The New Rules of Weightlifing for Women. Don't know if her diet advice is any different. Would have to read the Amazon reviews.

It is ALL about the insulin. Everyone knows that but 'can't we all get along' Ornish. Atkins got it. Ornish doesn't have a clue.

MAC, apparently there are two parts to her book, one for carb sensitive folks and one for carb friendly folks. But her shopping list for carb sensitive folks (from the excerpt) had nothing but low fat products on the list, like low fat milk (I am carb sensitive and I won't even touch milk unless it's half and half!), low fat meats, low fat cheese and yogurt, etc. I have done the low fat/low carb thing. It left me ravenous, unsatisfied and not feeling too healthy. I believe healthy fats are good for us.

I am going to look at her weightlifting book, since I'm going to start a good exercise program soon. But then again TNT offers a program in the back of their book, although it's geared to men. Thanks for the link to the book.

I've met Cassandra personally and she is a BIG low-carber! The editors at Women's Health must have chopped up her original manuscript because she does NOT believe in the low-fat theory at all. I'll be interviewing her for my podcast show soon, too, but here's a blog interview I conducted last year:

Thanks Jimmy. I read a brief excerpt from her book on Woman's health website, and it briefly described her plans along with shopping lists for both carb sensitive and normal carb eaters.

PLEASE ask her opinion of butter, coconut, etc. when you interview her. Her shopping lists had NOTHING but low fat items. It will be interesting to hear what she says.

Thanks Jimmy!

I know she had to bite her tongue with that book in a lot of areas because of the politics of health these days. She is ABSOLUTELY ripped and beautiful! A GREAT representation of the healthy low-carb lifestyle.

Wow she sure is muscular!

I went into amazon and they let you read excerpts from her diet book. I am afraid the recommendations are pretty much lower fat, she comes out and says her recommendations are lower fat. From my bad experience with South Beach (hungry all the time), I just can't do low or even "lower" fat anymore. I didn't mean to sound harsh when I said I wish she'd written a woman's version of TNT, but honestly I wish she would. I've been going through the exercises in the back of the TNT book and they are definitely geared toward men. I might buy her exercise book though, just for some decent exercise that isn't too hard for out of shape ladies!!

Anyway, thanks for your input but I am enjoying the TNT way of eating very much. Looking forward to your next interview with Dr. Volek Jimmy!

Hey everyone, my interview with Cassandra Forsythe was posted at my podcast show today:

She addresses the "low-fat" stuff in her Women's Health Perfect Body Diet book and a whole lot more.
