The Silver Cloud Diet

Hi Stef, I'm a little curious about this statement. Dr. Keith Berkowitz took over The Atkins Center and ran it until it closed (by legal necessity) six months after Dr. Atkins' death. I was a patient of Dr. Atkins and am still a patient of Dr. Berkowitz. Is there someplace that claims Dr. Salerno ran the practice instead? I'm pretty sure it's not the case.

The patients of Dr. Atkins were dispersed amongst SEVERAL physicians, Dr. Salerno and Dr. Berkowitz being two of them.

True, once the practice closed officially (6 months after the death of Dr. Atkins), the patients were forced to go elsewhere. But Dr. Berkowitz is the person who ran the actual practice at The Atkins Center from the time of Dr. Atkins death until it closed.

If I recall correctly, we were all given a list of recommended doctors at that time. But I just continued with Dr. Berkowitz in his new practice. I wish I had hung onto that list, because it would be nice to be able to share that with people now. There used to be a list of "Atkins Approved" doctors up on the Atkins Nutritionals site too, but that came down about that time too. I can't tell you how many times I've wished I had that list since I moved to California.

I know but you don't have any in the Los Angeles area last time I checked. :-( I found a guy that's okay. He's not a low carb doctor per se, but he's not against it either. Still, I find myself waiting until I get back to NY to see Dr. B. instead.

I started the Silver Cloud diet yesterday. One of the reasons I wanted to start this was to force myself to cut down on the amount of food I was eating. I have been eating low carb but gaining weight, I am not one of those people that can eat as much fat as they want and not gain. I am good at following a plan but tend to over indulge if left on my own. Hopefully, this gets me back on track. Basically, you start the diet with a two week modified fat fast (called detox full fat fast). No fruit or veggies, 2 ounces of meat, chicken or fish twice a day. Eggs for breakfast, two snacks (high fat cheese, nuts, pate, pork rinds, etc.). At least 15 minutes of exercise. Lots of water and cayenne lemonaide (which I love to drink hot). I was hungry today but am going to be stubborn and follow this for two weeks. I am not weighing myself, I am going by how my clothes fit (pants are starting to get snug). It must be working, I am spending a lot more time than usual in the little girls room, I am releasing a lot of water which is good. Hopefully the fat burning kicks in soon. After the two weeks, portion sizes increase and you start adding in other foods like veggies. Twelve more days to go!

Thanks! I have read some of your posts about cutting back and was inspired to go that route myself. I love eating limitless low carb but it does not love me. I haven't exercised for a long time either and it feels good to start back up again.

Please do keep us updated on how you are doing with this plan. I would be very interested in knowing how it works for a long time low carber such as yourself. I wish you much success!

I do have a criticism about the book already. In the detox plan (first two weeks a.k.a. induction), the food lists says to not have any vegetables or fruits and to limit meat to 2 ounces. When you go to the detox recipe section, some of the recipes of tomatoes, onion, greek yogurt and even the juice and rind of an orange! Also when you read the serving size for the recipe, the servings are more like 6 ounces instead of 2. I really dislike inconsistencies like this in a plan. I hate being left with questions about what is alllowed and what isn't.

I just came across a bit of interesting information in the boo:

"Get a full 8 hours of rest. Every night. No matter what? Feeling
insomniac? Try drinking 2 tablespoons cream before bed."

Anyone ever try cream before bed? Does it work?

Stuff like this makes me question how much plans have actually been used. Seems like something like this would get fleshed out pretty quickly if it had actually been used a lot in clinical practice, but I think sometimes docs put the "finishing touches" (aka "I am working out the details as I write the book") right before they go to print.

Then again, it may just be a misprint.

Yes, I do--cream shots, straight up. It works fine--I don't usually have problems falling asleep, but it squelches my appetite if I was feeling like a midnight snack. Doesn't seem to affect my weight loss, although I don't know what it does to blood sugar as I don't check.

Today came the magic of day three, hunger has gone away. I mixed a little ground beef with some beef broth, cream and cheese and it made a satisfying soup today, that probably helped the hunger too. Now it is just getting through the lack of variety in the next 11 days. It is better than the Atkins fat fast though, a few more calories and a few more choices.

Day 4

I added a couple of ounces of ground beef to my omelet this morning and it made a world of difference with my hunger. I completely missed my second meal today.

Eggs, cheese, ground beef, beef broth, cream and butter today. I also had two glasses of cayenne lemonade, which I really like. I do not know how much I lost the first two days (because I did not weigh when I started) but I weighed yesterday and today and I am down 2 lbs.
