I'm relatively new to the low-carb lifestyle, evolving to it after about a year of eating a primal diet. The hardest part has been coming up with low-carb, moderate protein, high fat breakfast options that are not egg-based. I have an egg sensitivity and can't eat them more than once a week. I've done 2 oz of hamburger or ground pork or leftover chicken with coconut oil or butter and greens and have lost my taste for that as a breakfast dish since summer started in earnest. I indulge in Bulletproof Coffee in the morning with about 2T butter and 1T coconut oil so I have the fat part covered. Any suggestions?

Hi, Deb! Welcome to the forums! Luckily, I don't have an egg sensitivity, but I'm not terribly fond of them and never have been. I think if you check out the Other Breakfast section on my recipe website, you'll find a few things that might appeal to you that don't have eggs. My Bacon Smothered Burger and Sausage Tarragon Cream on Toast come to mind at the moment. The link is in my signature. I'm sure you'll get some non-egg ideas there. And always remember, you don't have to eat breakfast foods at breakfast. You can have my Quick Skillet Pizza or any number of make-ahead casseroles that are eggless, or something like this: http://buttoni.wordpress.com/2011/07/13/...-eggplant/

I have to agree with Peggy. Anything that you like to eat for lunch or dinner is just as good for breakfast. Leftovers from dinner are about the quickest thing to heat up in the morning.

Have you thought of bone broth?

I struggle with eating breakfast--always have. But I know its important to get some fat and protein into me fairly early on in the day. Bone broth has been my solution--and I add plenty of butter to my cup right before drinking it, so its a good hit of fat too. Between my bullet-proof coffee and bone broth, I get lots of good fat and some protein early in the day.

Re protein levels--I've found various analyses of it and protein ranges from 10 grams to 22 grams per cup. At 22 grams, that's about a third of my daily protein so I use that number. I figure that's probably pretty close since I boil the bones for 72 hours and start with fairly meaty bones and lots of marrow and knuckle bones (plus pigs feet).

LLL - What a great idea! I've recently decided I need to add bone broth into my daily diet to improve my gut anyway. Never thought about having it for breakfast! Thanks!

I have a cream coffee shake with ice. Double cream with a shot of coffee and two stevia tablets. For some protein i will include some ham, bacon or sausage. This usually ends up being breakfast and lunch as I am full for hours! If you don't mind upping the carbs a little - try adding a tablespoon of peanut butter to your shake or a scoop of protein powder to up the protein.

I lost 50 pounds on a ketogenic diet early 2012. I have kept it off ever since on a low carb high fat diet. My weight is now stable and "normal" for the first time in my adult life

They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. With that in mind, why not eat a ribeye for breakfast? If you can't eat eggs and you are tired of bacon wrapped sausage dipped in mustard (one of my favorites), you can eat anything you would normally eat for lunch or dinner--for breakfast.

I have cottage cheese and coffee w/cream many mornings. That gives me my protein and my fat.

I also like sausage fried up with green peppers and onions.
