Jimmy John's Gargantuan Unwich

Today I had lunch at Jimmy John's, a sub/sandwich chain that offers the "Unwich" option, which is your sandwich wrapped in iceburg lettuce instead of bread. I got the Gargantuan, which truly was gargantuan, and had:

Roast Beef
Turkey
Smoked Ham
Provolone Cheese
Tomato
Cherry Pepper
Hellman's Mayonnaise
Italian Vinaigrette

all wrapped in a couple three lettuce leaves. This was then wrapped in paper so you could actually hold it in your hand and eat it like a sandwich like everybody else who got the ones with bread. It was a really good sandwich and I did not feel like the "odd person out" at all--next time I'm adding bacon and the avocado spread. I wish all sandwich places would get a clue and offer this option--you can have any sandwich on their menu as an "Unwich". It was so nice to eat my sandwich with my hands and not have to use a plate and knife and fork. This would, without the vinaigrette, be a good choice to eat in the car, it's that neat.

My son and his wife turned us on to Jimmy John's, here in Spokane, just last week. I had an eight inch 'unwich' and I was very impressed! Just watch out if you get the ones with tomatoes in them, they tend to leak out the bottom. It sure was nice to be able to enjoy a sandwich type meal at a restaurant. But here in Spokane they did not offer any low-carb type of drink, not even coffee. At least, not yet!

Thanks for the tip on the 'Unwich' from Jimmy Johns. There is one nearby and I will keep that in mind as a good LC lunch alternative.

Thanks Denise for tellin' me about JJ's! I've never even heard of the place, but found there are 4 locations in San Antonio, TX ... which I will definitely check out on my next visit into the city! I live about 45 mins away from SA ....

BTW, the JJ Gargantuan has 5.42 net carbs and the Hunter's Club® Unwich has a little over 2 net carbs (breakdown under lowcarb):

I had my first Jimmy Johns UnnWich today. I got the Billy Club version and it was really good. Wrapped neatly in iceberg lettuce, then with some sandwich paper. Was pretty filling and rather tasty. Next time I might just get the Gargantuan, depending on what my appetite is at the time. It's a good change when you're on the go and need a quick LC meal. Thanks for telling us about Jimmy Johns!

I looked up their locations and there's one a couple of miles from us! Can't wait to try it!

Thanks!

They are very good. I had my first one last week. A Number 11 (Italian with the works). Lots of meat, cheese, peppers, etc. It is by far the best fast food option out there.

There's one not too far from me but I've never been there. How much do they cost? There are no prices listed on their site.

Wow...thanks for the info! We've got one in town & I'll be checkin' it out next time I'm needing something of the fast food variety! I've been there a couple of times when I wasn't LC-ing, now it's nice to know that I can add them back onto the list!

I think most of their regular sandwiches are $5.50 and the Gargantuan is $7.50. Same price if you order it Unwich style.

I went there today for lunch, but this time I wasn't as hungry and just got a regular "Vito" unwich (#5). It's 343 calories and 3.75 grams of carbohydrate (and .89 grams of fiber). It was $4.99 plus tax. The Giant Club Sandwiches are $5.99 plus tax and the Gargantuan is $7.99 plus tax. The Slims (just meat & cheese & no veggies or sauces) are $3.99 plus tax.

I have to say, I really like the nutrition information on their website--you can customize any sub and it tells you the nutrition information. This is helpful to me as I am tracking everything in FitDay for a while to see how much of what I'm eating.

They just opened one near me and I finally got to try it. Love the Unwich.

I wasn't hungry enough to try the Gargantuan, but I'm sure I will in the future.

Thanks for the info, Denise! That was yummy and just hit the spot. I tend to go to Subway and get salads with the sandwich meat, but this is very nice when you just don't want another salad.

It is a great restaurant, and I eat there frequently. The only issue is the amount of salt—especially with the Italian meats.

I read this thread this morning, and looked up Jimmy John’s: there is one close to where I live! So I went there for lunch and bought a Vito Unwich. It was very tasty. It seemed a bit skimpy, but I’m wondering if that is because I am so used to a big sub roll when I have a grinder / hogie.

I must say, the place was mobbed at 11:30 a.m. and there were three cars outside with Jimmy John’s signs on them, doing delivery runs.

I have been weaning myself off diet Coke, and drinking unsweetened ice tea. This particular location does not have ice tea at all, which is too bad. Regardless, this is a great alternative to Carls Jr’s low-carb burger, and much easier to eat.

I've eaten there several times and really like getting their unwiches. Nice to have a place that understands the needs of us LCers!
