Atkins forum are so adamant ya gotta have 1500 calories, ya gotta have between 73 grams and 152 grams or protein says Phinney Volek and Westman.

I say that is overkill, when Rosedale says 50 grams is right for me. And the CDC is near that. And the World Health Organization is near that. And since I've been using online tracking, I feel good at even less than 1000kcal total.

So should I be what feels like to me, stuffing myself full of protein and fat to make calories and protein grams?

Or can I relax and say thank God I'm away from Starch and Sugar for good? Eat to what is satisfying to me and I'm not hungry and forget about all the rest? I mean I love love love vegetables! So what is the worry?

ps, this is the first time I didn't feel disgustingly bad doing super low carb. What am I doing right? I don't know! But this time I will be able to stay away from vegan/vegetarian, because I AM feeling good eating this way. Thanks be to God.

Go with what feels RIGHT for YOUR body! We all need to tweak things to find out what works for our own metabolism.

If you're feeling good and have energy at the levels your doing now, go with it. Just continue to listen to your body and make changes when necessary.

Maybe you're feeling good this time because you're getting enough fat and enough protein to work for your body, and you've discovered the right combination.

Enjoy it!

I read from a post polio Dr. that your protein requirement is half of your ideal weight, so I always think of my ideal weight as 120 (which I 'm sure I'll never reach again), so 60 grams is my requirement. I don't worry if I go over some, but I don't try to. But if I don't get enough protein, I feel as though things aren't working right. Excess protein converts to higher blood sugar according to Atkins and others.

Thank you, I will enjoy it.

Yup I'm not obsessive about 50, I can hit 60 too, but oh my gosh the idea of chocking down three times as much! Ack

Good!

I felt attacked and then dismayed. Hanging out there wasn't the best idea! I'll just come round these parts from now on, thanks you two.

When I first started trying to figure out how much protein to eat, I was shocked at how little it seemed--all the formulas I found pointed to around 60 grams and that seemed like nothing to me.

I couldn't do that at first...I was hungry and felt awful. I kept eating enough meat to feel satiated, although I knew I was eating too much and my weight loss had stalled. BUT when I discovered a ketogenic WOE (thanks to Jimmy!) and tried that, I was fine with between 40 and 60 grams of protein because I was getting more fat. For me, getting enough fat was the key.

My body LOVED that! But it took me a long time to figure out what my body liked best. And then I discovered that I needed to keep tweaking things as I lost weight. However, even with all the tweaks, I still do best on high fat, low carbs. High fat is critical for me.

Even now my protein and calorie intake will vary some day to day. Some days I really crave protein so I will eat more; other days I won't even have any meat--just eggs, cheeses, avocados, nuts. I listen to my body. What I eat and what I want to eat seem to change with physical and mental activity levels.

Hang in there and let your body tell you what you need!

I agree, Orange Sparkle - I can't load up on that much protein. My GI just rebels!

And thanks, JuliaN, for that notation. I remember seeing a number very much like that somewhere, too.

I can manage 50-60g... some days I can manage a bit more. Most days I don't! but the source is important in how much I get. If I eat a lot of "heavy" meats, I'm blah and sluggish and I can tell my GI tract is Not Happy with the challenge. Eggs! yeah Cheese! mmmm Of course, they're not as dense a protein as meat. Some days I *DO* crave meat (we're having nice ribeyes for dinner tonight, and I can't wait). But I have a problem chastising myself for slacking on meat protein, and I'm glad to see I'm not the only one having some difficulty achieving the "recommended" amounts.

Are we all women in this post?

Hey, cheeses, avocados, nuts just add the canned black soy beans and you are vegetarian lol. Which might be the way I'll be happiest, but for now, I'm gonna go meaty at least through induction.

Why the heck can't ya buy those black soybeans to cook? Talk about living on a shoestring. And being able to do low carb as a vegetarian.

With 1000 or fewer calories, just keep an eye on your thyroid. I seem to get hypothyroid when my calories get too low.

If you are looking for absolutes, somebody will give them to you. My only advice is this--keep the carbs low, and the rest will take care of itself. If that works out to 1200, 1500 or 1800 calories, then that is what works for you. If your calories are lower, then your carbs will be lower as well and that isn't bad thing. I wouldn't worry so much about the protein. Like I just said, it will take care of itself.

Thanks again. Ah but HOW LOW should one go? I really hate the under 25 grams. And that whole, go up 5 grams a week or so and see. It's too picky and scientific if you know what I mean.

Aren't you low carbing and burning fat as long as you are under 50grams of carbs?

I have to freaking start ALL OVER AGAIN with induction. So I'm asking, after induction, couldn't I just jump to under 50 grams a day and expect great results?

I have to start over because after a nasty storm and no power, I broke down and got snacks. Dangnabbit.
I live in midtown Tulsa.

Oh and ps, I don't want to include grains such as wheat/corn. But some tiny potatoes oh yes, it doesn't make me go more more more, then this and then some sugary things etc...And fruit fruit makes me happy and not bingey. But grains, good Lord! And sugar, fuggehdaboutit.

So, what are you doing to correct the hypothyroid? I'm taking 43.25 mg Lugol's (been on Lugols for 13 months) and LC/HF since Memorial Day. I was down into <5 grams of carbs for a week or so and I noticed a change. Ben Greenfield mentions eating liver and sweetbreads or liver powder & thyroid supplement in addition to the Lugols.

I'm back up to 10-17 carb grams, now, and don't seem to feel as bad. Thanks.

As far as the Atkins Police, you have to do what is working for you. Remember that the mantra is "n=1".

I'm trying to get my blood ketone level >1.0 and stabilized, so I'm tweaking protein and carbs to find the right mix. I KNOW for me that if I consume >30% of my calories in protein that it'll convert to sugar and my BK level will tank. I'm a runner, so a >1 BK level is important to me.
