Dr. Thomas Seyfried is the premier researcher of ketogenic diets for brain cancer

Cancer is a word none of us ever wants to hear when describing the health of themselves or a loved one. There's a lot of controversy surrouding what kind of nutritional approach is ideal for preventing and treating cancer despite the fact there is a body of evidence supporting a calorie-restricted, high-fat, ketogenic low-carb dietary regimen. That's one of the reasons why I included an chapter in my upcoming new book 21 Life Lessons from Livin' La Vida Low-Carb on this particular subject because the message is too important for people to miss. I includ some of the best research being done on various cancers in my book, including brain cancer which is field of interest being examined by today's podcast interview guest.

In Episode 302 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore," we hear from Dr. Thomas Seyfried, a researcher from Boston College who runs the Seyfried Laboratory dedicated specifically to taking a closer look at such diseases as epilepsy and brain cancer. I first heard about Dr. Seyfried's work in February 2007 when he released this study published in the journal Nutrition & Metabolism that showed how a restricted high-fat, low-carb ketogenic diet was the best way to fight cancer cells that are causing life-threatening tumors in mice. I've been attempting to get him on my podcast for a while for an interview and it was well worth the wait!

You'll hear Dr. Seyfried talk about his original interest in the subject of ketogenic diets for epilepsy when he was at Yale University (and the lack of interest in them at the time), how a ketogenic shrinks brain tumors, the details of his KetoCal study, the controversy over using mice instead of humans in his study, what "calorie-restriction" translates from mice to humans, why a 400-500 calorie, ketogenic diet will make you "metabolically healthy," whether a ketogenic diet is useful on other cancers, why the ketogenic diet is a "non-toxic approach to the management of cancer," the best diet to eat for the prevention of cancer, and why a 7-10 day distilled water-only fast annually is the best way to ward off cancers of all types.

Click here to listen to this half-hour interview with Dr. Thomas Seyfried that is chock full of some of the most compelling research on cancer you've ever heard! ENJOY!

I found this interesting...wish I could bring myself to fast for 7-10 days every year, but I can't see that happening right now.

Research like this always reminds me of fasting for religious reasons. It's good to know that it's both physically and spiritually healthy.

It proves God knew what he was talking about when He inspired the authors of the Bible to write about fasting.

Here are some answers from Dr. Seyfried to questions people had about this interview:

What exactly is so dangerous about unrestricted ketogenic eating?

The ketogenic diet contains large amounts of high caloric saturated fats. It is not healthy to eat large amounts of saturated fats. This will contribute to cardiovascular disease and diabetes. High blood glucose levels are associated with high fat consumption even when there are no carbohydrates in the diet. High blood glucose levels will accelerate tumor growth. The liver will synthesize glucose from the glycerol component of the triglycerides. Consequently, the KD should be consumed in restricted amounts, especially over prolonged periods. As I have clearly written in my articles, “more is not better” when it comes to eating the ketogenic diet for either epilepsy or brain cancer.

Does this mean the only safe way to very low-carb is to engage in intermittent fasting or eat tiny meals?

Yes. People can prove this to themselves by simply measuring their blood glucose levels under these conditions.

What about people who do this for management of epilepsy, do they restrict calories, too?

Yes. The KD is always administered in restricted amounts to patients with epilepsy. Seizure protection is lost in epilepsy patients who consume too much KD. Again, it relates to blood glucose levels. Epilepsy is managed best when blood glucose levels remain stable in the low range (65-75 mg/dl).

Are you implying that people who eat an unrestricted ketogenic diet are doing gross metabolic harm?

Gross metabolic harm would happen only if the diet was consumed in large amounts over extended periods, e.g., weeks or months. The diet is healthy only when consumed in small amounts. This will produce the condition of low glucose with elevated ketones.

Totally. Funny how that always seems to happen.

The question I wanted to ask him, especially towards the end when he said "who can actually do the 7-10 day therapeutic fast?" was, do you (Dr. Seyfried) fast, and if so, for how long and for how often?

I was also curious as to why the water needed to be distilled.

HUHHHH???? Not according to my glucose meter.

I would say bring him back for some "devil's advocate," but I don't want to detract from his basic message, despite his sat fat phobia.

Sugar is the enemy; fat is my friend. The only bad fats are artificial fats.

There were a lot of questions that came from this interview, so we may have him back again, Dan.

I'd like to hear him in conversation with Dr. Carlson. A respectful exchange of ideas between two scientific minds. I agree, we shouldn't detract from his basic message, but possibly he is overlooking additional avenues of investigation that may change the lives of many people.

That would be a fascinating exchange of ideas.
