Hi, Jimmy

Have just discovered your pod casts, have downloaded a whole lot of them, and absolutely LOVE them. I feel like I already know you. So, with internet research and the “stir” created by Tim Noakes in South Africa, I decided to go low carb. Weight wise, it’s been fantastic. I’ve been overweight for 20 years now, and yo yo dieting hasn’t worked. I’ve been at it for 5 weeks. I like to be a long distance runner, and I’ve completed an Iron Man in South Africa – still stayed overweight.

Now here is my problem – ever since I’ve gone low carb, I’ve had this cough. Now I’ve been listening and reading what I can about the “Atkins Flu” that you’ve been talking about, and perhaps its related.

The one doctor I saw, who is actually a running mate of mine, told me its an allergy and gave me allergy medication. This did nothing to stop the cough. I then went to see another doctor (also a friend – we’re a small town J) who is totally open minded and also LISTENED to me when I talked about symptoms and my diet. She then thought this cough could be related to some kind of acid reflux but no medication has helped. I still cough. My lungs are absolutely clear.

Short of upping my carbs, do you have another suggestion of how I can determine if this cough is diet related. For the last 3 weeks, I have not been able to run. I immediately get flu like symptoms when I try. Otherwise, I’m sleeping far less – which is good for me – was sleeping way too much. Have far more mental energy and am physically feeling really good, except for the stinking cough.

Before I go back to my open minded doctor, please can you give me some indication of whether you think this cough could potentially be related to my diet.

Thanks so much.

Regards from a cold and foggy Swakopmund in Namibia.

P.S. I wonder if I’m the only person in Namibia who’s heard about you…..

Hi.

I'm not Jimmy, but I thought I might comment.

Welcome.

I have never heard of those symptoms as part of low carb, or low carb flu. I don't think low carb flu is like a real flu.

It sounds like you have a immune system fighting something that wil take time. Where I live (southern US) we call this "the crud." When you get the crud, you cough up junk for a couple weeks and it slowly goes away. Everyone gets it, not just low carbers.

I used to get it once a year, now maybe once in the last 4 years.

There's nothing I've ever heard about a cough as a result of low carbing. It's probably just a coincidence to the change in carbohydrate intake. I get a persistent cough as a result of asthmatic bronchitis, but the doctor should have heard something in your chest if that was the case.

P.S. Jimmy isn't answering because he's on vacation until June (though I think he's been peeking in every once in a while).

Is it a dry cough? Do you feel you have mucous production in your eyes and mouth? I can tell you what Paul Jaminet would say. Make sure carbs + protein = at least 600 calories (150 grams). Don't count the carbs in vegetables.

Your cough has nothing to do with the Atkins flu which usually only lasts a few days. I think it is a coincidence--you developed a cough at the same time you started a low carb diet.

i thank all of you who have been answering my queries. indeed the doctor has finally decided that there was something rattling in my lungs. after a week of antibiotic, it got slightly better but not gone, and it seems to be some kind of allergy. now that i'm on a strong anti allergy, we seem to be getting somewhere. i think actually the reason that i did not get the lung thing so much was cos there was no sugar, or other cr*&p to fuel the little bugs and yesterday for the first time in 6 weeks i could do a nice walk on the beach with the dogs and kids and not feel like i was going to pass out.

now i just need to work on the weight loss plateau i'm experiencing :-) All good things come to those who are patient!
